The Bendix Forward Looking Radar (specifically the FLR-20 or FLR-21) is a bumper-mounted sensor that serves as the foundation for the Bendix+ Wingman+ Advanced and Bendix+ Wingman+ Fusion collision mitigation systems. Its primary function is to detect and track the distance and relative speed of metallic objects up to 500 feet in front of the vehicle, regardless of weather conditions like rain or fog. In addition to providing the data for Adaptive Cruise Control to maintain set following distances, the radar triggers critical safety interventions, including Impact Alerts and Stationary Object Alerts. When integrated into a Bendix+ Wingman+ Fusion system, the radar works in tandem with the Forward Looking Camera to definitively identify stationary vehicles and initiate automatic emergency braking to mitigate rear-end collisions.
